This piece was inspired by the sexual revolution that exploded during the 18th century. Female sexuality became more socially acceptable and acknowledged - pleasure, desire, arousal, these topics were no longer considered off-limit, and women were free to explore and indulge in sex. Sex and power went hand in hand, and whilst the role of ‘mistress’ was common, mistresses of the elite began to hold more power at court in early examples of a woman using her sexuality to get ahead.

This piece is an attempt to fully embody a woman’s unashamed sexuality, with no fear of judgment or repercussion. This modern take on an 18th century ‘robe à la française’ represents the vagina, its soft ruffles and delicate fringing contrast with asymmetric shapes and deep folds. This garment is unashamedly bold and unmistakably feminine.
